Everyone loves a story with unsavoury characters. Damaged, messed up characters, who are working through their personal issues in the most spectacular of ways, badmouthing and blaspheming as they go. And Northstarr is as unsavoury as they come. Follow the Mercury Division and its members Northstarr and Slash as they try to stop the TRF from controlling the known universe. A mission filled with manipulation, murder and a whole heap of foul language.
On the whole, I really enjoyed this book for what it was, which was an action-packed space adventure. It blended in all the elements of a badass team, great one-liners and some funny yet subtle references. That being said, there were aspects of this book I think could have been executed better.
There was a lack of development for some of the side characters, specifically with Ramirez, her relationship with Northstarr is something I believe could have been atleast addressed. For the purpose of spoilers, I wont mention it here. But why they interact with each other the way they do, is something I would have liked to understand better. Similarly with Sicarious, although a brief backstory was presented, I would have liked to understand the character chemistry with him and Northstarr a little better too.
However, this does not take away from the fact that it's a well-executed story. It contains some brilliant action sequences, parts of which are graphic but in keeping with the theme. I also like the use of humour and it features some great one-liners from the characters, which is great for humanising them in this epic futuristic world. The narrative is well constructed and the story features some nice surprises along the way, which for me, altered my expectation of where the story was heading in a positive manner.
The artwork for this book was bold and dynamic, it captured the tone of this universe very concisely, particularly the action sequences. A very well organised layout of scenes elevated the quality of this book. I also admire the effort that went in to planning out the panel placements and it made the book very easy to follow. The colours were equally bold and eye catching and visually speaking, it's a stunning book.
I have to also emphasise my admiration for the lettering as this book contains a lot of dialogue for the characters and it's easy to follow. Without giving anything away, this book featured the use of a word to represent a very specific sound effect which I've never seen in a comic book before. I won't give away when it occurs, but it relates to a specific body function that some would find funny.
To conclude, I very much enjoyed this book, I would have like to have seen a bit more character development in parts, but on the whole I thought this was a good read and I would recommend it to the sci-fi and action enthusiasts.
