The NuWorld Chronicles is a labor of love almost 30 years in the making. An ode to the comics of the 90’s that inspired it, NuWorld is a version of Earth that’s history and therefore future was altered by a number of events. Picking up in 1985, The NuWorld Chronicles introduces the reader to it’s world by way of mankind's greatest creation: The Meta-Human. Created to fight the battles ordinary men could not, the veterans of the great Meta-Human army are now home from their conflict The Great War. The fate of the world itself hangs in the balance as humanity decides what to do with these new super humans now walking among them. An Entire Universe. In One Title.
Upon reading issue one, I was curious to see what sort of story it would tell. Although the futurustic alternate earth setting isn't something that I naturally gravitate toward, the premise of the story was very interesting.
The overarching plot of "Meta-Humans" against ordinary humans proved to have a compelling angle and the war setting was the best way to show this conflict on a grand scale. The use of a flashback allowed for a more fleshed out story and helped establish the setting better for the present day.
I enjoyed seeing the character of Ravendark, my only criticism relating to him was that I wish we could have seen more as I believe his character has great potential. Then again, this is only issue one so it's likely we'll see more of him.
On a more critical level, there were aspects of this book that I think could have been improved. I felt that the issue featured a lot of captions and dialogue. Unfortunately, I felt that the placement of so many words pulled me out of the excitement of the story and tarnished the reading experience. This is clearly a large universe and there's a lot of backstory, but it feels like the captions overpower the artwork.
Additionally, the artwork style itself was something that I couldn't lock in to fully. I found it very difficult to navigate what was going on in parts of the story and found myself reading the same page twice to ensure I took in everything that was going on.
I'd like to finish by saying that, if you're a fan of sci-fi or fantasy stories then this is certainly worth a read. I am also curious to see where the story goes. This is clearly part of a larger universe, so I can't fairly judge the entire story. My findings are purely on issue one.
For a first issue, it does feel very "middle of the road". I think with a more refined approach it could have been done better to tell its story. It does establish the setting very well, but it was lacking in its execution.
I would also like to point out that first issues can often be hit or miss for establishing a new universe and this particular issue seems to try to cram in a lot of content in the short amount of pages it has, but I'm excited to see where issue two goes and how the story will progress.
